Truck tonneau covers

Truck tonneau coversTruck tonneau covers have been around almost as long as the automobile has been around. Its first use was for the open rear compartment in which passengers rode. The tonneau cover came from not only the cover that was placed on this area, but the tonneau name also came to symbolize a certain kind of car.

The word “tonneau” is actually derived from the French language. Translated, the word means cask, container or cover. Therefore the word is actually quite an appropriate name for these covers.

The first vehicles with these covers actually included covers that were fixed into one place. This means that the covers could not be removed at all. However, there were some that could be removed. The earliest tonneau automobiles had a rear-facing hinged door as a rule, but other options, such as single or dual side doors, were introduced not long after.

These tonneau automobiles were actually the precursor to the modern sedan vehicle. Cadillac manufactured the very first closed body four-door car in 1910.

Despite the early origins of the word “tonneau” things began to change in the next few decades after the Cadillac four-door sedan was introduced. After the end of World War II, the term “tonneau” evolved into meaning something other than what it once did and instead began to signify a hard or soft cover that encloses the rear storage area.

In more recent years, truck tonneau covers have become favorite items for truck owners to have to be able to put on the beds of their trucks. These covers serve a few different purposes in assisting truck owners.

One of the main things that these covers do is provide protection from the elements for tools or equipment stored in the truck bed. Take for example the person who spends a lot of time on the construction site. If rain or snow starts to fall, you do not need to worry about moving the lumber, tools or materials from the back of your truck into an indoors area. All you need to do is make sure the cover is in place and it will protect all of the items from the elements around.

Another thing these covers do for those who like to leave items in the back of their trucks is provide a little extra security. Some of these covers have tool boxes as a part of them so this means that the tools can be locked up into the tonneau tool box. But even if you don’t have any locks, the simple fact that there is a cover in place makes it harder for anyone who wants to steal something from you to have easy access to what they want.
