Some tailgate lifts are designed to lift materials into the back of a truck, van or trailer. This type is also known as a liftgate. This is the style of lift where cargo is placed on a platform, which is lowered from the bed of the vehicle. It is then raised into the bed by way of a hydraulic cylinder system.

For many professions this type of tailgate lift is invaluable. Delivery drivers, for example, can save countless hours (not to mention their backs) by investing in a liftgate. Professionals who regularly use heavy equipment and need a way to transport it can save money by purchasing a lift rather than another vehicle. People with disabilities and those who care for them can also use liftgates to enter and exit an automobile.

The other style of tailgate lift is made to raise and lower only the tailgate. This is particularly useful on trailers with extremely heavy tailgates but may also be installed on a standard pickup truck. Also based on a hydraulic cylinder system, these lifts are manufactured to elevate or drop a gate with the touch of one finger or the tap of a toe.
