Although
many people believe that fiberglass tonneau covers are the best on the
market, they sometimes ignore other options. Of course, it is up to
the consumer to decide which cover is best for his truck. But still,
it is definitely worth considering all the options.
In addition to the covers made of fiberglass, some are made of a heavy-grade
vinyl. Vinyl covers are sometimes be thought of as less reliable because
of the possibility of the cover ripping or tearing, but this is something
that usually only happens if an owner is careless with the cover. As
long as you take proper care when applying and removing the cover and
make sure there are no items sticking out of the truck bed that could
rip the cover, vinyl covers are an effective option.
The biggest advantage of fiberglass covers is that they can be locked
firmly into place to avoid them from moving or being jarred when you
hit a bump. The latch can be located on different places, but often
the latch is on the tailgate of the vehicle, or on the side.
These are usually made to latch pretty tight and unless you manually
try to take it loose, it is doubtful it would come loose by itself,
regardless of how bumpy the road is or how windy it is outside.
Fiberglass tonneau covers also offer unmatched theft deterrence and
weather-proof protection to the contents of the truck bed it is covering.
Disadvantages to fiberglass covers include weight, decreased gas mileage,
and difficult removal. Because it is heavy, a fiberglass cover contributes
significantly to the truck’s weight and decreases gas mileage
because of this.
Also, truck owners who require the versatility of an open bed and a
covered load at different times in the same day or week even, might
not be happy with a fiberglass cover. Its weight makes it awkward to
take on and off – it’s not a one-person job.
Retractable vinyl or canvas covers are better-suited for easy truck
bed conversion.
However, fiberglass tonneau covers are more solid and much less susceptible
to tearing or ripping than canvas covers are. If you require a covered
truck bed most of the time, fiberglass is best-suited to this purpose.
